Company News >> Peng Junmin team AMOLED display technology breakthrough foreign monopoly 21th,Apr,2018
“After two rounds of reply, the reviewing experts recognized our achievements. I am very pleased to receive this award.” Professor Peng Junji of South China University of Technology felt after receiving the first prize of Guangdong Province's Technology Invention in 2017: “This is also the team’s common Efforts and results will come true."
Under the support of the core scientific research achievements of the Peng Junyu team, South China University of Technology and Guangzhou New Vision Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd. have developed a flexible next-generation semiconductor (AMOLED) display with the first oxide thin film transistor technology in China, in the ultra-clear flexible display field. Hit the mark of Guangdong's "smart creation."
Research is often at the forefront of technology applications, and the window of industrialization is short and urgent. Recently, when interviewed by Peng Junyu, he expressed the hope that the core technology of the team will achieve mass production as soon as possible and grab the first hand to help Guangdong and China drive innovation and development.
Breakthrough foreign monopoly, core technology allows the display "roll up"
Since the birth of the display, people have not stopped pursuing high-resolution, full-color displays. From the CRT vacuum technology in the 1960s, the LCD technology in the 1990s, to the ultra-thin organic light technology in the early 21st century, the technology of the display industry has been changing rapidly.
In August 2013, the advent of a film with a thickness of 0.01 mm and a weight of less than 1 gram caused a stir in the display industry. This is the first full-color flexible AMOLED display with the first oxide thin-film transistor technology in China. It was independently developed by South China University of Technology and New Vision Company. Peng Junmin said that no company dared to display the flexible screen for the audience to play, but we have this confidence.
The South China University of Technology team broke through the integration of key technologies for flexible high-definition display and adopted a new thin-film encapsulation technology, which made the flexible screen resistant to bending and curling. The flexible screen has been tested and bent more than 100,000 times. The brightness of the screen has only dropped by about 4.5%.
A key element of the display's ability to deliver high resolution, narrow bezels, and high integration is the speed at which electrons pass through semiconductor materials in thin-film-transistor devices, an industry-wide measure of mobility.
In order to optimize and improve this mobility performance, HGIC's research team spent 8 years. Peng Junhao found during the investigation that the low mobility of amorphous silicon materials in domestic semiconductor material production lines could not meet the demand of AMOLED display screens. If the materials of commercial oxide semiconductors invented by foreign countries are adopted, although the migration rate is higher than that of amorphous silicon materials, due to the monopoly of intellectual property rights in foreign countries, equipment and materials are all dependent on imports.
"There is definitely a better combination to achieve better performance," said Peng Junhao. He led the team and decided to look for alternative materials from the oxides. Throughout the oxide spectrum, there are countless elements in the mix. From 2008 to 2016, after repeated theoretical experiments and repeated experiments, they experienced numerous failure attempts, and finally invented a new material system of lanthanide rare earth doped oxides. The measured stable electron mobility was as high as 50.2 cm 2 / Vs stable mobility.
The electron mobility rate of the new material system is three times higher than that of materials used by the current internationally renowned manufacturer, Korean LG, and is five times higher than Sharp's. The device using the new material achieves an ultra-high resolution display of 700 PPI, which is 40% higher than the resolution of the iPhone X.

The mutual benefit and complementarity of production, study and research, and the core technology has entered the “national team” inspection
Guangdong is a major province of display industry, including terminal products such as televisions, mobile phones, and computers. The production value of the entire industry chain is nearly 200 billion yuan. At present, this industry is rapidly renewal, and it is in a critical period of development in the direction of technology. The next outlet is likely to be the AMOLED flexible display.
In August 2010, in order to promote faster and better transformation of scientific research results, South China University of Technology and Skyworth entered a joint venture to incubate Guangzhou New Vision Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd., forming a cooperation platform for production, learning and research that closely cooperates with universities.
"Colleges and universities, laboratories, and enterprises have formed a complementary and mutually beneficial situation." Peng Junmin said. The company relies on China National Laboratory for Luminescent Materials and Devices to establish a strong technical support. The first domestic flexible oxide AMOLED display with oxide thin-film transistor technology was born in the company's pilot test platform and was the first shot in the industry.
Whenever the scientific research team of South China University of Technology has achieved results, the new horizon company has become a “bridgehead” linking industry and research. The results were prototyped in a more repeatable and stable process-type equipment and brought to market.
Peng Junmin told reporters that although the new materials developed by the team have not yet been applied by large-scale mainstream manufacturers, they have already entered the “national team” corporate technical support list. At present, BOE Group and Truly Semiconductors are interested in this technology and conduct mass production demonstration at different levels.
