Company News >> Samsung cuts LCD production and shifts its focus to QD-OLED displays 20th,August,2019
Samsung has been one of the leading display manufacturers for quite some time, and its latest innovation will be its quantum dot OLED (QD-OLED) panel. The company has already used Quantum Dot (QD) technology for its TVs, and OLED panels have become the mainstay of its mobile division for more than a decade. Now, Samsung's goal is to combine the advantages of both display technologies into one display solution.

A new report from the Korea Herald said that Samsung has begun to limit its LCD production line at its South Korean factory, mainly due to lower profitability and demand. This will also allow more resources to be allocated for new QD-OLED screens. Li Dongxun, CEO of Samsung Display, confirmed that the company will soon be preparing to launch its first QD-OLED panel, but did not provide any details on when or what equipment will debut.

Quantum dot displays are essentially a hybrid between traditional LCD and OLED displays. Instead of using LED backlighting, they use a separately lit blue LED that converts light into red and green, consuming less power in the process. QD-OLED panels will use blue OLED pixels and LED quantum dots for greater efficiency and color accuracy.

According to industry analysts, Samsung plans to invest 10 trillion won (8.3 billion US dollars) for QD-OLED production, the first product will be high-end TV.
