>> Samsung: Accelerate QD-OLED commercial market to maintain market leadership 2nd,Sep,2019
According to industry sources, Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, is also pushing for the commercialization of quantum dot organic light-emitting diode (QD-OLED) panels as it strives to reduce the production of LCD panels.
Samsung Display CEO Lee Dong-hoon said recently that the company will soon launch QD-OLED panels; however, Lee declined to disclose the timing of the official announcement of the QD-OLED production investment plan.
In addition, Samsung Display also decided this month to close one of the Gen.5.5 LCD monitor production lines with a monthly capacity of 90,000 panels in Asan, Chungcheongnam-do, and will reduce the capacity of another production line by nearly 3 next month. Ten thousand pieces. The company had a capacity of 250,000 pieces per month in South Korea.
According to reports, Samsung soon converted the planned production line to a QD-OLED production line.
Since April last year, there has been news that Samsung has shown that it will invest about 10 trillion won ($8.3 billion) in QD-OLED, but this has not happened yet.
QD-OLED refers to a comprehensive display that uses both OLEDs and quantum dots. Samsung is currently developing panels that use blue OLED illuminators and quantum dots to convert blue light into red and green light. If the QD-OLED panel is commercially available, Samsung Electronics may use this self-illuminating panel in its TV.
Samsung’s recent plan to suspend South Korea’s LCD panel production line is mainly due to the decline in profitability of the LCD panel business caused by oversupply caused by Chinese competitors. However, this decision can also be seen as a priority for Samsung's move from LCD to QD-OLED production, and this shift will help drive the OLED market.
An industry official said: "As LCD production declines, Samsung will accelerate the commercialization of QD-OLEDs to maintain its leading position in this high-end display market."
