[Japan's first 5nm chip Socionext self-developed chip announced: it will be used in the field of auto driving]

Japan’s Socionext recently announced its first 5nm chip, which is also Japan’s first self-developed 5nm chip. Socionext is a fabless pure design company. In other words, the chip is self-developed, but will be handed over to the foundry for manufacturing. As for whether it is TSMC or Samsung, it is currently unknown.

Socionext launched its 5nm chip mainly to target its competitor NXP (NXP). They hope to gain a competitive advantage in auto-driving cars as soon as possible. However, NXP's 5nm chip will be earlier and will be sampled by the end of this year. The specific architecture of Socionext's self-developed chip has not been announced, and the official revealed that it plans to produce samples in early 2022.

[Counterpoint: Apple will win 53% of TSMC’s 5nm chip production this year]

Recently, on Friday, Counterpoint Research released some data based on its estimates for the chip industry in 2021. Last year, the revenue of the chip foundry industry increased by 23%, reaching US$82 billion. Counterpoint said it will grow by 12% this year, bringing revenue to $92 billion. TSMC should grow by 13% to 16% this year, which is quite consistent with the overall growth rate of the industry. Samsung's revenue in 2021 is expected to grow by 20%. What will drive the industry's growth this year will be the revenue of wafer shipments and the price increase of similar wafers by about 10%.

[Wang Chaoyang, academician of the American Academy of Sciences: mass production of all-solid-state batteries should be after 2030]

According to the Financial Associated Press, Wang Chaoyang, a member of the National Academy of Inventors of the United States, believes that all solid-state batteries should be mass-produced after 2030. Of course, if there is a huge scientific breakthrough, it may happen within 10 years.

Wang Chaoyang said that according to the current progress, it should take another ten years to mature in science and manufacturing technology before mass production. At present, the energy density of liquid lithium-ion batteries has reached 300Wh/kg, which has reached a limit. The next step or the next generation of batteries must develop solid-state batteries and gradually transition to all-solid-state lithium batteries.
